Pre-accident and replacement value
Start with the vehicle specification, mileage and condition immediately before the loss. Replacement asking prices differ from achieved transaction values. The loss date matters: a historical accident needs dated market evidence or an appraisal. Current listings are only an explicitly accepted proxy for a recent loss, and do not establish a legally binding valuation.
A documented repair scope
Repair economics depend on parts, labour time and local hourly rates, paint, materials, diagnostics, calibration and relevant ancillary costs. Use supplier quotes, workshop estimates or insurer-approved data. Record their source and VAT treatment. Unknown costs must remain unknown; a visible subtotal is not the final teardown estimate.
Hidden and structural damage
Photographs can show damaged panels and components, but cannot establish chassis geometry or all concealed damage. Distinguish confirmed visible findings, probable damage and inspection requirements. Structural zones, restraint deployment, steering and suspension impacts require appropriate physical inspection and repair procedures. Model low, base and high repair scenarios.
Salvage and total-loss economics
Compare the complete repair scenario with the selected settlement basis minus recoverable salvage plus entered handling costs. Salvage should come from bids or an explicit sourced estimate. The share recoverable by the insurer matters. Without salvage evidence, a repair/value ratio alone does not establish which scenario costs less.
Why a fixed percentage cannot decide the claim
Policy terms, valuation definitions, VAT treatment and local legal requirements differ. An internal insurer threshold can flag a case for review, but is not a universal law. The economic index explains relative costs and scenario overlap. ChatAuto does not decide coverage, legal liability, claim approval or final indemnity.
ADAS and electric-vehicle risks
A repair affecting glass, bumpers, radar, cameras or suspension may require manufacturer-specified diagnostics and calibration. For BEV/PHEV vehicles, potential battery, HV cable or cooling damage requires qualified specialist review. Photographs cannot certify traction-battery safety and do not justify assuming a replacement battery.
Human review and a reproducible report
A professional can correct a finding, change a part price or labour time, and add damage found during inspection. Recalculate the economics immediately and save the reason, previous values and new values. The internal PDF contains the evidence, assumptions, comparables, scenarios and limitations. The final authorised claims decision remains with the insurer.
Methodology
Repair scenario = priced repair scope + entered supplements + entered ancillary costs + supported diminished value.
Total-loss exposure = entered settlement basis (or selected pre-loss value) − recoverable salvage + entered total-loss handling costs. Positive advantage means repair costs less.
AI-assisted estimate from remote photographs. This is decision support, not a physical inspection, expert appraisal, confirmation of insurance coverage or final claims determination. An authorised professional must apply the policy, local law and required inspections.
